Soma Herba was founded in 1978 by Dr. Arie Abraham, a biochemist with a background of 40 years in research and development of plant-based products and medicines. He had worked for many years at the Vulcani Institute and Teva Pharmaceutical Company, where his specialization was medicinal herbs. His vast knowledge in this area made him internationally known in the scientific community.
After performing a survey for the Ministry of Agriculture, searching for active materials in plants that grow in Israel, Dr. Abraham started his long voyage into what would become his special love: herbal health products and cosmetics.
Soma Herba started out as Intergen. Dr. Abraham, with two other biochemists, founded this lab, which specialized in growing herbs rich in active materials for the Teva Pharmaceutical Company. After a while, Dr. Abraham decided to start his own lab, producing what was then still very new: herbal cosmetics. He cooperated with dermatologists, holistic practitioners and cosmetologists, using his knowledge in developing products that promote skin health and beauty, using herbs and other natural ingredients, and without the use of synthetic chemicals.
Our skin is a vital organ, affected by the environment in ways that influence not only the way we look but our overall health. Everyday protection, nourishment and hydration bolster the skin's immunity against the effects of the environment. It is also well known today that the skin reacts in its own way to the slightest imbalance, both physical and emotional, and its requirements vary accordingly.
With this in mind, Dr. Abraham observed the various desert plants that grow in the southern part of Israel, and succeeded in isolating the active materials that enable them to flourish there despite environmental extremes typical of the desert. He consulted colleagues who specialized in dermatology, and implemented all this knowledge in the development of his then revolutionary herbal cosmetics and skin-care products. He used to go out and gather plants from mountains and deserts, extract them in his lab, and then make his various creams and salves. As time went by and more people started using and enjoying his products, the production became more technologically advanced. But the emphasis on quality and the use of natural ingredients has not changed to this day.
